"there's just no way," she whined, "that i could ever be alone."
i furrowed my brow, creating lines in my forehead, cradling the phone between my right shoulder and ear. there was nothing to say. she wouldn't listen. there was nothing i could say to convince her.
"then," i started with a sigh, "call him."
it was what she'd wanted to hear, but it wasn't what i'd wanted to say. i'd opened the floodgates. i'd let her take those proverbial three steps back. she would never know how strong she really was.
